In a format that offers huge variety and a fascinating hands-on experience, the Swiss Museum of Transport presents the development of transport and mobility, past, present and future, on road and rail, on the water, in the air and in space, and explains how communication works. These are the core themes of the Swiss Museum of Transport. More than 3,000 displays in approximately 20,000 square metres of exhibition space testify to a history that is, quite literally, moving. Attractions that are unique to Switzerland - such as the filmheatre, the Planetarium, Swissarena and the Gotthard tunnel show, plus the Hans Erni Art Museum and many more exhibitions - make a visit to the Swiss Museum of Transport an even more worthwhile and memorable experience.
The Filmtheatre delights audiences with images of exotic cultures in far-away countries and breathtaking nature films. Spend 40 minutes or so in a different world, experience all these wonders in minute detail and comprehensive splendour. In a nutshell, it has taken the cinematic experience into a new dimension.
An expedition through the universe awaits visitors to the digitally operated Major Planetarium, one of the most modern in Europe. The stars in the sky are brought within easy reach, and the audience in their comfortable seats are taken on a fascinating tour of outer space.
Swissarena presents an image of Switzerland as never before. Almost 200 square metres of Switzerland - the world´s first walk-on aerial photograph of an entire country allows visitors to take an astonishingly close look at whichever parts of Switzerland interest them most.
The Swiss Museum of Transport is an experience to be savoured in all its fascinating diversity - a place of discovery, a collection of original artefacts that illustrate the history of transport. Opened on 1 July 1959, it currently attracts around 800,000 visitors a year. The Swiss Museum of Transport is proud of the fact that it is Switzerland´s most-visited museum.
